What Is The Best Type Of Kitchen Worktop?

There are certain elements of a showroom design consultation that are difficult to replicate virtually, like browsing our many displays and asking questions about them there and then.

One very common question we hear a lot is this one; “What kitchen worktop should I choose?”

And it’s a good question because there’s so much choice!

When it comes to picking the right one for you, here are the highlights:

Granite and Quartzite Worktops

Available in lots of colours and finishes, both granite and quartz are natural materials with highly durable properties. They’re robust, heat resistant and scratch-resistant, which makes them good choices for busy kitchens.

This project showcases how showstopping and individual a granite worktop can look, shown here in ‘Black Beauty.’

Quartz and Ceramic Worktops

Manmade, heat, stain and scratch-resistant. Whilst most people think granite is the go-to if you want durability, ceramic worktops such as Dekton are giving them a run for their money in terms of hardiness.

Quartz is currently the most popular choice for worktops, and for good reason. Not only is it beautiful, but it comes in a huge variety of colours and styles.

As you can see from this below kitchen, a quartz worktop offers a real sense of luxury, and it’s often impossible to tell it isn’t actually a natural stone.

Acrylic Kitchen Worktops

Minerva, in particular, is becoming increasingly popular, particularly with those wanting a larger than average worktop. Acrylic surfaces can be moulded into any awkward corners and won’t have any visible joins, so it gives you a perfectly sleek finish.

There are so many options out there, and if you want an even better idea of what suits you, your style and your budget, check out our guide to choosing the right worktops here.

Perhaps you’re still designing your dream kitchen – if so, there’s a couple of trends to consider when picking your worktop.

Mixing colours and materials is IN for 2021. Darker colours are traditionally avoided for fear they’ll make the room look small, but if you mismatch with bright high-shine surfaces, the light will be bounced around the room.

Darker palettes are also great for families with children and pets.

Light, high-shine doors, sticky hands and wet noses do not mix well!

Another favourite that’s seeing a return for 2021 is the retro multi-level worktops. This high-low design feature breaks up the worktop into zoned areas. Using different materials on your island to the rest of the kitchen also creates a talking point.

This is what you want when you’re finally entertaining your first guests!
